Celebrating 87 Years of Music, Milestones, and Community

For more than eight decades, the North Iowa Band Festival has stood as one of Mason City’s finest celebrations of talent, camaraderie, and community spirit. What began as a local tradition has grown into a hallmark event that unites businesses, organizations, schools, and families in a shared love of music and heritage. I’ve marched in the parade, smiled as I watched my children do the same, and even spent several years bringing the excitement to viewers at home through live TV broadcasts.

I’m proud to say this year marks my 27th year on the committee—a journey that began when then-Chair Vance Baird asked if I’d be interested in joining. All these years later, I remain grateful for that invitation.

Our festival thrives because of the remarkable students, dedicated band directors, and supportive community members who pour

This year, the 87th North Iowa Band Festival highlights a theme that truly captures our spirit: “Bands, Birthdays, and Brass.” It’s a tribute to the moments and memories that deserve to be recognized.
We’re celebrating marching bands from the past and present that have left a lasting imprint, and individuals whose ideas spark progress. We remember the many people whose dedication year after year continues to shape our communities and culture.

Among these milestones, one of the most significant is our nation’s birthday—a meaningful reminder of the perseverance, creativity, and shared history that define America. This theme encourages us not only to appreciate where we’ve been, but also to look ahead with confidence and gratitude.

The North Iowa Band Festival is far more than a parade or a single day of performances. It stands as an acknowledgment of our heritage, our present-day accomplishments, and the vibrant future we’re building together. Here’s to another year of traditions that uplift, connect, and inspire North Iowa.
