I recently had the honor of reading an inspirational speech at the Community Conversations event hosted by the Greater Mason City Chamber at Southbridge Mall. Approximately 80 community members gathered to share ideas for the revitalization of Southbridge Mall and discuss how the space might once again become a vibrant part of community life. The evening reflected something that makes Mason City special: people here are willing to show up, listen to one another, and work together toward a shared vision for the future.
As a member of the Chamber’s Workforce Committee, which helped coordinate the event, I was grateful to participate in the conversation. Because I am also a member of Mason City’s Toastmasters club, Shibboleth Toastmasters, I was asked to deliver a speech by Jeff Siegler encouraging communities to think creatively about their future and embrace new possibilities.
I also bring the perspective of a newer resident. I relocated to Mason City for work in the fall of 2022. After first renting a small studio apartment while getting settled, I purchased a home in 2024. Today, I share that home with a family who also relocated to Mason City for work, and it has been rewarding to help others get acquainted with the community in the same way many people helped welcome me.
While Mason City and Northern Iowa are smaller than some larger metropolitan areas places that I
lived in previously, I have found that many of the same amenities exist right here in the heartland.
The passion people have for making Mason City a wonderful place to live and work is unmistakable. I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to that effort and confident that, if we continue bringing our ideas and talents together, the future of this community will be bright.
