2025 Distinguished Citizen

Gary Wattnem was named this year’s Distinguished Citizen, recognizing his decades of leadership, service, and philanthropy. A retired Major General in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve, Wattnem continues to represent the military as the U.S. Army Reserve Ambassador for Iowa while devoting his time and talents to numerous civic, educational, and community organizations.

Wattnem’s record of volunteerism is extensive, including longtime service with River City Kiwanis, where he currently serves as Membership Director, and as Iowa District Membership Coordinator for Kiwanis International. He has provided leadership as Congregation President of Trinity Lutheran Church, served on the MercyOne North Iowa Board of Directors, guided preservation efforts with Wright on the Park, and strengthened regional transportation through his work on the Mason City Airport Commission. He also co-chaired the Keeping NIACC First campaign, helping advance North Iowa Area Community College’s mission. His philanthropy further amplifies these efforts, supporting organizations that enrich the quality of life in North Iowa.

Through his professional achievements, military service, and tireless community involvement, Gary Wattnem exemplifies the values of a Distinguished Citizen. His leadership has left a lasting mark on Mason City and North Iowa, making him a most deserving recipient of this honor.
