Personal Growth Through Leadership North Iowa

Written by: Kael Julseth, First Citizens Bank

Participating in Leadership North Iowa (LNI) has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I’ve enjoyed the hands-on learning opportunities and the chance to connect with other emerging leaders across the region. Having grown up in the area, it’s been meaningful to return after college and begin building my career here in North Iowa.

I initially hesitated to apply for the program, as I had only been working in the community for about seven months, but I’m so glad I did. Through LNI, we’ve toured local businesses, heard from inspiring speakers, and collaborated on a class service project, “Growing Up Local”. Our mission for the project is to strengthen the local community by promoting family-friendly events that bring people together while helping families discover valuable programs, services, and opportunities available in North Iowa.

My own experiences growing up in North Iowa, such as attending community events, participating in park and rec sports, and being part of county fairs and town celebrations, helped shape who I am today. It’s meaningful to now play a role in creating similar opportunities for the next generation.

Working alongside my classmates has been a highlight of the program. I’ve improved my communication skills, learned to listen to other perspectives to collaborate with others. I’ve also had the opportunity to lead the sponsorship committee for Growing Up Local, which has pushed me outside my comfort zone as an aspiring leader.

Through LNI, I’ve built lasting connections with classmates and professionals across a variety of industries, and I know that these relationships will continue to shape my journey in North Iowa. I would highly recommend Leadership North Iowa to anyone looking to grow as a leader while making meaningful connections in our community.
