Southbridge Theater has been a labor of love for the past year and a half. What began as a simple idea evolved into a collaborative effort involving countless emails, contractors, technicians, and hours of planning. Along the way, we learned about everything from acoustics and projection systems to fire codes, door specifications, and ADA compliance.
The concept was straightforward: the unique layout of the space naturally suited a movie theater, so why not bring it back to life? After gutting the interior, we preserved its original bones while creating a modern theater with a nostalgic feel. Today, Southbridge Theater features a state-of-the-art 7.1 Dolby sound system, a laser projector, and design elements inspired by the classic movie-going experience of the 1980s.
Originally, the space housed five theaters. To make the most of taxpayer dollars, we chose to fully equip just one—Theater #5. This approach allows us to evaluate demand and financial sustainability while minimizing risk. Other spaces are being reserved or considered for future uses, including additional entertainment options and a possible dinner theater.
We are also excited to welcome the Iowa Independent Film Festival, now in its 19th year, to its new home at Southbridge Theater. The festival showcases independent films from Iowa and around the world each year following Labor Day.
Ticket prices will never exceed five dollars, and concessions remain affordable as this theater is intended to be a community asset. We plan to show movies periodically as sponsorships and staffing allow, with the goal of expanding offerings over time.
