In June, I had the privilege of leading our annual North Iowa Fly-In to Washington, D.C., bringing together regional leaders to advocate for the issues that matter most to our communities. Representatives from the Cities of Mason City and Clear Lake, the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, North Iowa Corridor EDC, and Visit Mason City/Main Street Mason City joined us for three days of meetings and conversations focused on North Iowa’s future.
Together, we met with Senator Charles Grassley, Senator Joni Ernst, Representative Ashley Hinson, officials from the U.S. Department of Transportation, and policy experts from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. We discussed priorities including transportation infrastructure, housing, small business growth, child care, and Essential Air Service.
One of the reasons the Chamber leads this trip each year is because it demonstrates the power of collaboration. While each organization at the table has a different mission, we share a common goal: creating a stronger North Iowa. When local governments, economic development organizations, tourism partners, and chambers of commerce work together, our message is stronger and our region is better positioned for success.
Our delegation advocated for transportation investments that will improve safety and connectivity, discussed the importance of maintaining reliable commercial air service at Mason City Municipal Airport, and highlighted workforce challenges related to housing and child care. These conversations help ensure that federal policymakers understand both the opportunities and challenges facing North Iowa communities.
We also took time to participate in a placemaking tour of The Wharf, a nationally recognized waterfront redevelopment project. Learning how another community transformed an underutilized area into a vibrant destination provided valuable ideas and inspiration to inform future projects closer to home.
Advocacy is one of the Chamber’s most important responsibilities. It is about building relationships, sharing our story, and ensuring that North Iowa has a seat at the table when decisions are being made. I am grateful to our partners who invested their time in this effort and proud of the unified voice we brought on behalf of our region.
