What an honor to get to see and judge all of the submissions to Mason City’s “Pride in Place” photo contest with two other judges, wonderful photographers Michelle Skarpness and Christy Adams. The idea of the theme was to show off the things that we like and love about Mason City. When you start to think about the options, there are so many possibilities—the Frank Lloyd Wright and Prairie School architecture, the city and county parks and recreation areas, the rivers, the Prairie Rock Trails and Bike Park, the River Walk, the Sculptures on Parade, museums, North Iowa Band Festival, high school and college athletics and activities, churches, dozens of concerts and events downtown, at the Mason City Arena, North Iowa Events Center, and NIACC Auditorium, and so much more. There is so much to see, do, and enjoy in our community.
It is always enjoyable judging a photo contest. There are so many creative people and wonderful photos submitted. Everybody has a different perspective of life around them. We were tasked with choosing only ten photos and selecting one of them as the Best of Show. In reviewing the photos, we first looked at whether or not the subject fit the contest theme, then composition, exposure, lighting, and overall quality. The three judges all had favorites, which added up to more than ten, so of course, we had to narrow it down. In the end, we agreed on the ten photos that would be selected for the photo contest.
They will be on display at the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum, where the Best of Show will be announced. Thanks to all who participated and submitted photos. Keep taking more great photos of our community!
