As students head back to school, many are carrying more than new backpacks and class schedules. They bring with them lessons learned in workplaces across North Iowa. For many high school students, this summer was about more than earning a paycheck. It was an opportunity to work as part of a team, communicate with customers, solve problems, manage time, and learn what it means to be dependable. These aren’t just workplace skills. They’re life skills that will shape how students approach the classroom and,
eventually, their careers. Whether they spent the summer serving ice cream, working on a construction site, assisting in an office, helping on a farm, or completing an internship, students gained valuable experience.
They discovered what they’re good at, what challenges them, and perhaps even what they want to pursue after graduation. As students return to school, our work doesn’t stop. Businesses can continue shaping our future workforce through job shadows, classroom presentations, internships, mentoring, plant tours, and partnerships with schools. At the Chamber, we’re proud to help
build those connections through programs like College Connections, YIELD, STEM Fest, and other workforce initiatives that introduce students to local careers and employers.
The future workforce is sitting in classrooms today. The question is simple: How will we continue investing in them?
By answering that question today, we’ll help build a stronger workforce and a stronger North Iowa tomorrow.
